baby-led-weaning-breakfast

Why Breakfast Matters for Babies

  • Provides energy after an overnight fast.
  • Build healthy eating habits early in the day.
  • Great opportunity to introduce iron-rich and nutrient-dense foods.

Breakfast gives an opportunity to provide early in the day key nutrients and textures. It is ideal for serving a combination of different grains, protein, and fruit. While offering an opportunity to also practice skills like chewing and self-feeding.

What to Look for in a BLW Breakfast

Breakfast doesn’t have to be complicated! Use simple foods that you already have available in the home. Things to consider when preparing breakfast for your baby include the food’s texture, variety of nutrients available, and the size/shape of the food item.

Soft, Safe Textures

Foods given should be cooked till soft and squishable between their fingers so the baby can develop their self-feeding skills.

Examples: soft pancakes, cooked fruit, baked oatmeal or iron-fortified baby cereal

Nutrient-Rich Choices

Meals should include a balance of different nutrient rich foods.

  1. Breakfast should aim to include food sources rich in:
  • Iron
  • Protein
  • Healthy fats

Examples: eggs, high-fat yogurt, iron-fortified baby cereal, nut or seed butter, fruits

  1. By incorporating a variety of foods, you will be more likely to meet the different nutrient recommendations. Offer variety by:
  • Rotating through different daily meal options
  • Choose foods that are easy to prepare
  • Modify your breakfast to be baby friendly (squishy, soft and easy to hold)

Try this! Many parents will modify their own breakfast so they only have to prepare one meal. This provides an opportunity to expose the baby to different foods. Just make sure that the options are modified to be easy to hold and soft. Don’t get overwhelmed with meal prep, choose recipes that are quick and simple for your family.

Breakfast examples to explore:

  • one pan breakfast with scrambled eggs, veggies and hashbrowns.
  • Sheet pan eggs or an omelette
  • Breakfast casseroles or baked oatmeal (like banana oat or carrot muffins)
  • Pancakes or waffles

Finger-Sized Portions

Some easy shape suggestions that are easy for babies to grasp and self-feed with.

  • Finger strips
  • Wedges
  • Soft food sticks

Prepare the food so that they are either:

  • Long pieces that can be held using the whole hand. Make sure the food is soft and squishy
  • Slightly thicker pieces that are easy to hold

Baby-Led Weaning allows babies to get extra practice at self-feeding, hand-eye coordination, and chewing skills.

FAQs About Baby Led Weaning Breakfasts

What can I give my baby for breakfast without choking?

  • Aim to feed soft foods and proper preparation to reduce the risk of choking. These are  foods that squish easily between your fingers and that can easily be held (such as wedges, long strips or disks).  If you are not feeling confident about providing solids to your baby, a pediatric dietitian can help walk you through different food cuts and/or methods that may work best for you and your family.

Can babies have toast during BLW?

  • Yes, many different breakfast foods can be modified into finger foods! Just make sure to only add a thin layer of spread to the lightly toasted bread and to cut it into finger-sized strips to minimize their risk of choking.

How do I include protein at breakfast for babies?

  • Try adding one of these to breakfast! They all contain protein: eggs, yogurt, tofu, and/or beans.

Are eggs safe for baby led weaning?

  • Yes, eggs are full of protein, healthy fats and other important nutrients. Just make sure the eggs are fully cooked and prepared into soft grabbable pieces. Scrambled or omelet style eggs bites or strips often work well!

Should I give my baby fruit every morning?

  • That is up to you! It can be a great way to introduce variety, but it certainly doesn’t HAVE to be everyday. Foods to include are grains, protein foods, and healthy fats. Introducing variety is the best way to explore different textures, flavours and nutrients.
