Are Chia Seeds Safe During Pregnancy?

Chia seeds are generally safe when eaten in moderation. The swelling of the seeds when wet, forms a gel-like consistency.

This can create a “clogging-like effect” when swallowed dry and in larger quantities. To reduce risk of choking:

  • Soak seeds before eating
  • Introduce (small amounts) to your diet slowly to avoid digestive discomfort or disruptions that may result from increased fibre in your diet
  • Drink sufficient water

Nutritional Benefits of Chia Seeds in Pregnancy

Chia seeds are very nutrient dense seeds! They are a good source of:

  • Fibre
  • Protein
  • Omega-3s
  • Iron
  • Calcium

Magnesium 36 mg 350 mg

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Chia seeds are high in the essential nutrient ALA Omega-3 fatty acid. 1 tablespoon nearly brings you to your daily nutrient intake goal for unsaturated fats!

Fiber

It’s estimated that one third of pregnant people experience constipation, and many report it most frequently in the third trimester. Increasing fluid and fibre and body movement (whatever feels manageable to you) will help reduce constipation.

  • Soaked chia seeds help provide hydration and fibre, which can help reduce constipation.
  • Due to the seeds incredible absorption capabilities, chia seeds are a great source of insoluble fibre. 1 single tablespoon of chia seeds is 3.7g of fibre!

Protein

  • Chia seeds are surprisingly protein packed considering their size. 1 tablespoon is ~1.9 g  protein!
  • They are an easy way to sprinkle in some protein to your day, which becomes especially handy when protein needs increase during pregnancy.

Minerals

  • Calcium: just 1 tablespoon provides 63mg of calcium! During pregnancy, calcium to the baby is prioritized over the maternal parent. If there is not enough calcium consumed during pregnancy. the body will take it from the parent, which can weaken bone density.
  • Iron: 1 tablespoon of chia seeds provides nearly 1mg of iron. During pregnancy, iron requirements grow to 27mg/day as the blood supply essentially doubles! Chia seeds are an easy way to contribute to meeting that nutrient goal!
  • Magnesium: 1 tablespoon provides ~36mg of the recommended 350mg. Magnesium also contributes to bone health, as well as muscle contraction/relaxation, supports nerve function and helps maintain blood pressure.

How Much Chia Is Safe in Pregnancy?

  • Typical safe amount: ~1–2 tablespoons daily depending on the person’s digestive tolerance to fibre.
  • General Rule: start with a little bit and slowly increase as tolerated. You know yourself best, so depending on your normal fibre intake, it will dictate how fast you can comfortably increase to avoid bloating and other uncomfortable gut symptoms.

How to Add Chia Seeds to a Pregnancy Diet

  • Stir into smoothies or yogurt.
  • Make chia pudding with fortified plant milk.
  • Add pre-soaked to a warm oatmeal or to overnight oats.
  • Sprinkle on salads or baked goods.

Keep safety in mind:

  • Avoid eating dry by the spoonful and soaking them in advance decreases the choking risk.
  • Pregnancy makes people more susceptible to foodborne illnesses, so when preparing food ensure:
    • You’re using pasteurized milks (or plant milks)
    • That product is adequately washed
    • Food is properly refrigerated, for example: don’t eat things if they’ve been out for longer than two hours or if the fridge was above 4 degrees celsius.

Possible Side Effects or Considerations

  • Increasing fibre significantly or eating it in excess can cause gas, bloating, or discomfort
  • Drink water with chia seeds to help support optimal digestion and support the benefits of fibre.

Check with a healthcare provider prior to introducing these nutrient dense seeds to your diet if :

  • you have digestive disorders
  • allergies/cross-reactivity to certain foods (particularly to sesame or hazelnuts)
  • Are on blood pressure or glucose medications

FAQs About Chia Seeds and Pregnancy

Can chia seeds help with constipation during pregnancy?

  • Yes! Chia seeds are jam packed with insoluble fibre. Just make sure to drink adequate amounts of water and introduce chia seeds slowly to your diet to help your gut adjust to increased fibre intake.

Are chia seeds better than flax seeds in pregnancy?

  • Both are great! Both contain rich sources of fibre which helps constipation that is a common side effect in pregnancy, as well as omega-3s (ALA) that are associated with fewer adverse health complications in pregnancy.
    • Chia seed’s nutrients can be absorbed without being ground, while also containing more calcium and antioxidants.
    • Flaxseeds need to be ground in order for the body to absorb their nutrients but contain more omega-3 (ALA),  lignans and magnesium.

Can I eat chia every day while pregnant?

  • As long as there are no other indications that suggest otherwise, like discomfort after eating and/or undesirable GI symptoms.

Consult your healthcare practitioner if you have concerns. A pregnancy dietitian is always available to discuss nutrient options with you during a 1:1 discovery call.

Do chia seeds provide enough omega-3s for pregnancy?

  • You can certainly get enough ALA form of omega-3 from chia seeds alone as 1 tbsp has almost a full day’s worth. However, ALA conversion to DHA or EPA is limited (see above), so additional supplementation may be needed.

Is chia pudding safe during pregnancy?

  • Yes, just ensure you are following adequate food safety rules. Prepare the food in a clean area and store the food properly (don’t leave out and ensure refrigerated foods are kept below 4 degrees). Remember: pregnancy increases risk of foodborne illness!

The Bottom Line

  • Chia seeds can be a safe and nutritious addition to your diet as they are fibre-rich, protein packed, and contain ALA omega-3s as well as iron, calcium and magnesium!
  • As with all good things, they are best enjoyed in moderation as part of a balanced diet. If introducing chia seeds for the first time, start slow and increase over time to avoid any GI disturbances from increased fibre intake.
