Why are cold lunches great for kids?

Some schools offer to warm up lunches, while others don’t. It’s also tough to prepare hot meals – whether it’s leftovers or a dish that doesn’t hold up well or gets dry after being reheated. Cold lunches are simple to prepare in advance and can be packed the night before, saving time in the morning.

Tips for Packing a Cold Lunch

  • Consider your kids preferences: Involve your child in the lunch-packing process, ask what they would prefer. This makes shopping and meal prep easier.
  • Keep things simple: Don’t stress about making multiple dishes. Stick to simple lunches, but play with different flavors and textures.
  • Pack ahead of time: Freeze items like muffins, fruits or applesauce to keep lunches cool. Prep them the night before or spend a couple of hours on the weekend to get ready.
  • Use leftovers: Put aside some of the cooked proteins and store them in an airtight container in the fridge for freshness. Use the same protein to prepare multiple meals with a variety of flavours and formats.
  • Add fruits and vegetables: Not only it’ll give the lunchbox a pop of colours, they bring in essential vitamins and minerals, antioxidants.
  • Whole grains and starches: Include starches like vermicelli, pasta, potatoes to fuel your child’s energy and help them stay focused throughout the day.
