What Are Nutrient-Dense Foods?

Nutrient dense foods are foods rich in vitamins, minerals, and fiber in contrast with their calorie content. They help to support your child’s nutritional needs for development and growth. Some examples of nutrient dense foods are eggs, dairy, nuts and avocados.

On the contrary, foods like chips, soda and candy are what we call “empty calorie” foods as they provide many calories but very little nutrition. They are mostly high in sugar and fats instead of the important nutrients we need for proper health!

Why Nutrient-Dense Foods Are Essential for Children

Support Growth and Development

Proper nutrition provides building blocks for bones, muscles, and organs. Choosing nutrient dense foods can help to ensure your child is getting their essential nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids to support proper brain health and development.

Boost Energy for Daily Activities

Choosing nutrient dense foods help to fuel children for school, their sports and to give them energy throughout the day. These foods help to prevent fatigue and help concentration.

Strengthen the Immune System

Nutrient dense foods help to support the immune system. Citrus fruits like oranges contain Vitamin C that helps with immune and wound healing. While whole grains and eggs have vitamin B that helps with proper brain health.

Build Healthy Eating Habits for Life

You can start creating healthy habits at any age! Early exposure to whole foods increases acceptance of variety that carry later into adulthood. This helps to reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart conditions and diabetes later in life.

FAQs About Nutrient-Dense Foods for Kids

How do I know if a food is nutrient-dense?

What if my child prefers snacks and sweets?

It’s actually quite common that children prefer snacks or sweets. They are familiar, highly palatable, and easy to eat. Offer structured meals and snacks and pair a nutrient dense food with a food that is familiar to them.

Do kids need supplements if they eat nutrient-dense foods?

Not necessarily! Children can obtain the necessary nutrients for growth if they are eating a balanced diet. If you have concerns, feel free to reach out to one of our pediatric dietitians.

Variety is important, however, focus on variety over time. Not in a day! Children need repeated exposures to food before building acceptance.
