prime-drink-safety

Prime hydration has become a new trend in many children’s drinking routine. The Prime company advertises its products as healthy drinks to stay hydrated. As a parent, you may be wondering : Is prime hydration good for my kid?

It’s important to choose the right beverages for your children so that they develop and grow in a healthy way. Read on to learn more about this famous drink and see if it’s worth the hype. Here’s the opinion of a family dietitian.

What is Prime Hydration?

Prime hydration is a beverage that is marketed to refresh, replenish and refuel. It is designed as a ‘’Performance beverage’’ to help active people and athletes stay hydrated during effort.

Why is Prime Drink So Popular?

Prime drinks were created in 2022 by influencers KSI and Logan Paul. Those amateur boxing players and Youtubers are famous among children. The heavy advertising they have done on social media, has reached the ears and eyes of youngsters.

Prime Sports Drink Ingredients and Safety

There are two types of Prime drinks: Prime Hydration and Prime Energy Drinks.

  • Prime Energy drinks

They contain high amounts of caffeine – 200 mg per can! This is the equivalent of 2 cups of coffee! This level of caffeine Is too high and not recommended for kids under the age of 18. Too much caffeine can lead to negative health effects.

  • Prime Hydration

Prime Hydration drinks are caffeine-free, but still contain quite the ingredient profile:

  • Water: Essential for hydration
  • Coconut water: Rich in electrolytes for proper hydration. Beware of coconut allergies.
  • Electrolytes (sodium, magnesium and potassium): Contribute to muscle function
  • Amino acids (branched-chain): Help with muscle recovery after a workout.
  • Antioxidants (vitamins A and E): Prevent cell damage caused by resistance training and intense workouts.
  • B vitamins: Important metabolism helpers
  • Artificial sweeteners (sucralose and acesulfame potassium): For the quick of sweet flavor
  • Natural flavors

Safety

Prime hydration is safe and not harmful if your kid drinks it in moderation. However, drinking two bottles per day (1800 mcg vitamin A) can put your child’s health at risk of vitamin A toxicity. The maximum tolerable daily intake of vitamin A (1) for children aged 9 to 13 is 1700 mcg.

Prime hydration also contains artificial sweeteners. As family dietitians, we recommend that parents limit the use of artificially sweetened products in their children’s diet. These drinks take the place of nutritionally-dense foods that are needed for optimal growth.

Is Prime Good for Hydration ?

Prime is not the ideal hydration drink for your kids. The electrolytes offered are oddly proportioned: very high in potassium, high in magnesium, very low in sodium. If your child is involved in strenuous physical activity, these electrolyte proportions are not optimal for hydration.

Prime VS Gatorade Health

Prime hydration and Gatorade have some similarities. However, prime hydration is different because of its low carbohydrate (sugar) content. For young athletes, sugars in Gatorade are important to boost performance and support endurance. Therefore, prime hydration isn’t a good source of energy for kids during and after physical activities.

Per serving (500 ml) Prime Hydration (500 ml)Gatorade (591 ml)
Carbohydrate6 g30 g
Presence of artificial sweetenerYes No
Sodium10 mg228 mg
Potassium700 mg63 mg
Magnesium124 mgN/A

Takeaways

Prime hydration is fine from time to time as an occasional drink. That said, it’s not the sports beverage of choice for your young athletes, because of its electrolyte proportions and lack of carbohydrate for fueling.

A balanced electrolyte beverage for your kids can be easily prepared at home and less expensive than store-bought options.
