what-do-prenatal-dietitians-do

You thought there was an abundance of information projected at you about nutrition before, but now that you’re pregnant, it seems like it is never-ending. Everywhere you go, someone has information or an opinion to share; from the internet, your doctor, your mother-in-law and even the lady at the store who frowned as you slipped a pack of Oreos into your cart!

We get it. As dietitians, we can help cut through all the food information, opinions and overwhelm to support you and your child throughout this exciting time.

What Does a Pregnancy Dietitian Actually Do?

A pregnancy dietitian is someone specialized in nutrition that can provide individualized support and evidence-based recommendations to reflect your health, lifestyle and personal goals.

They can support your nutrition journey and give practical tips and strategies at every stage of your pregnancy. Whether that be:

Before Pregnancy

  • Optimize fertility and hormonal health
  • Navigate prenatal vitamins + supplements
  • Manage health concerns like PCOS, diabetes, thyroid conditions

First Trimester

  • Mitigate morning sickness, nausea and food aversions
  • Reduce bloating and digestive discomfort
  • Feel confident about food safety during pregnancy

Second Trimester

  • Ensure you are meeting increased calorie, protein and nutrient needs
  • Support healthy fetal growth and development
  • Monitoring healthy weight gain

Third Trimester

  • Easy and quick meal ideas for fatigue
  • Manage heartburn, constipation and reduced appetite
  • Develop a postpartum and feeding plan

Postpartum

  • Support healing and recovery after birth
  • Create realistic meal strategies for life with a newborn
  • Establish healthy infant feeding habits and family nutrition

Support for your unique needs

While support with standard trimester goals is all well and good, what happens when things start to divert from the expected path?

Well, every pregnancy is different and your nutrition plan should be too. A dietitian can provide personalized support for:

  • Gestational diabetes and blood sugar management
  • High blood pressure and preeclampsia
  • Twin or multiple pregnancies
  • Vegetarian, vegan or culturally specific diets
  • Food allergies or digestive concerns
  • Subsequent pregnancy, where family and nutrition needs may look different

No matter what you are going through, one of our dietitians can make your plan feel like yours, not like more information being thrown at you.

Don’t I Already Get Advice From My Doctor or Midwife?

Some of that information may be coming from your doctor, obstetrician or midwife. You may be wondering why a dietitian is any different from the education and plans you have already been working on.

All of these professionals are important in your care. They play an essential role in monitoring your pregnancy, your baby’s development, your overall health and in preparing you for the next steps of the journey.

A dietitian complements the rest of your care team by focusing on another important piece of the puzzle: your nutrition.

Where a dietitian differs:

Pregnancy doesn’t just happen at those scheduled appointments and monitoring check-ins, it is in all the in-betweens.

In the symptoms, questions and new nutrition needs that come up, changing from week to week, even day to day! Having ongoing support means you don’t have to navigate those changes alone. Our dietitians want to be there for all of it.

Working with a pregnancy dietitian means you can:

  • Feel confident that you are fueling your body and baby with the nutrients you need
  • Receive personalized guidance, not a generic, one-size-fits-all approach
  • Troubleshoot new challenges as they arise, adjusting your plan as needed
  • Be proactive about your health and nutrition
  • Get answers to your questions from a trusted nutrition source
  • Gain reassurance that you are on the right track
  • Have someone in your corner, who gets to know you and wants to support you every step of the way

The Bottom Line

No matter where you are on your journey, whether it be preconception, deep in the throes of morning sickness or looking down the barrel at your delivery date, a pregnancy dietitian can guide you throughout it all.

We’re here to help you feel informed, supported and confident. So, next time someone gives you unsolicited advice or makes you feel judged at the grocery store, you can hear our voice defending your food choice honour and tune it all out.

Rest assured, we’ve got your back!

FAQs

When should I see a pregnancy dietitian?

The best time to see a dietitian is as soon as possible, whether it be in preconception or early pregnancy to support the whole journey and work with you to be proactive about the following stages. But don’t worry if you are further along, a dietitian will meet you exactly where you are!

What happens during a pregnancy dietitian appointment?

A dietitian will get to know you, your lifestyle, your habits and preferences to understand the full picture behind your nutrition concerns. Knowing this, they will offer evidence-based education and work with you to build practical strategies and goals that fit your lifestyle. (While also answering any and every nutrition question you may have.)

How to find a qualified maternity dietitian (in Canada or the USA)?

For qualified support, look for someone with a “Registered Dietitian” or “Registered Dietitian Nutritionist” title as it guarantees that they have had formal education and are fully qualified to help you. You can also look for their previous experience and their counselling approach to ensure it is the best fit for you.

Can a pregnancy dietitian help even if my pregnancy is healthy?

Absolutely! There is no need for anything to go wrong before you meet with a dietitian. We can still help you build healthy routines, ensure you are getting all the nutrients you and baby need, reduce stress and overwhelm and prepare for what comes next.

Do I need a referral to see a dietitian?

Great news, you do not need a referral to meet with any of our dietitians! So you can go ahead and get started as soon as you’re ready. However, in some cases, your insurance company may require a physician’s referral for reimbursement. So it may be a good idea to check with them.
