  • My Background in Pediatric and Family Nutrition

I’ve worked as a Registered Dietitian for more than a decade, with much of my career centred around children, parents, and families.

In primary and community care, I’ve supported families with everything from pregnancy and breastfeeding to introducing solids, picky eating, constipation, growth concerns, chronic disease, allergies, meal planning, and building a positive relationship with food.

Over the last several years, family nutrition has become an especially important part of my work. Rather than looking at one person’s nutrition in isolation, I like to understand how the whole family eats, what meals actually look like at home, and what changes are realistic.

  • What Motivated Me to Become a Dietitian?

I’ve always loved science, food, and the idea of working in healthcare.

When I discovered dietetics, it brought all three together. Nutrition gave me the opportunity to use science in a practical way while working directly with people and helping make everyday life a little easier.

  • What is your personal experience with families and as a mom?

I’m a mom of two active children involved in multiple sports, so I understand firsthand how challenging it can be to balance busy schedules while still getting nutritious, satisfying meals on the table that fuel the whole family.

I also know that feeding children rarely goes exactly according to plan. One of my children is a picky eater, which has given me an even deeper appreciation for how frustrating and emotional feeding challenges can feel, even when you know all the nutrition recommendations.

Insights into past and present experience:

Fertility Nutrition: Heather can support individuals and couples who want to build a strong nutritional foundation while preparing for pregnancy.

Pregnancy Nutrition: Heather has years of experience supporting clients through pregnancy in community and primary care settings. She supports nutrition through each stage of pregnancy and helps manage common symptoms and discomforts. Because of Heather’s extensive breastfeeding and infant-feeding background, she can also help families look beyond pregnancy and prepare for the next feeding stages.

Postpartum & Breastfeeding Nutrition: Heather is a Certified Lactation Educator with extensive training in breastfeeding, infant oral development, bottles, feeding development, and formula. She helps parents prioritize their own nutrition postpartum to support recovery and overall health while caring for their baby. Heather has also breastfed both of her own children, including breastfeeding during pregnancy and tandem feeding.

Infant Nutrition:The first year of life is one of Heather’s favourite areas of nutrition. She has extensive training in infant feeding, including breastfeeding, formula feeding, oral development, and introducing complementary foods. Using a non-judgmental approach, Heather helps families make informed decisions and reach their feeding goals, whether that means breastfeeding, formula feeding, combination feeding, or a mix that works for their family.

Baby-Led Weaning: Heather has extensive experience and training related to baby-led weaning and also used BLW with her own children. She focuses on helping parents introduce foods in a way that supports independence as well as gross and fine motor development while still prioritizing safety and nutrition. Heather understands life gets busy, so believes in making feeding our babies as simple as possible by incorporating foods the rest of the family is eating.

Child Nutrition: Children’s nutrition changes quickly as they grow, and concerns are rarely limited to a single nutrient or food. Heather has extensive experience working with children in outpatient and community care and can help with everything from growth and development to building a healthy relationship with food.

Picky Eating: Heather has additional training in picky eating and over 10 years of experience supporting families. She helps families manage picky or selective eating with practical strategies that support nutrition, encourage a positive relationship with food, and make mealtimes less stressful.

Teenager Nutrition: Heather has experience supporting adolescents with general nutrition concerns, family-based nutrition, digestive health, weight concerns, and disordered eating. Her approach with teens is practical, supportive, and focused on building a healthy relationship with food rather than creating unnecessary restriction or rigid rules.

Parent Support and Meal Planning: Parents often spend so much time thinking about what their children are eating that their own nutrition falls to the bottom of the list. Heather can help parents find practical ways to eat well while also feeding the rest of the family.

Family Nutrition: Over the last several years, family nutrition has been an important part of Heather’s practice. She believes that many concerns, especially picky eating, meal planning, and children eating differently from their parents, are easier to address when the whole household is considered.

Autism & ADHD Nutrition: Heather is comfortable working with children and families affected by ADHD and takes an individualized approach rather than assuming every child experiences the same challenges.
