Meet Melinda, Pregnancy and Pediatric Dietitian & Nutritionist

As a mom of 4, I understand that feeding a family can feel rewarding, stressful, messy, and overwhelming, sometimes all in the same meal. My goal is to help families make small, realistic changes.

  • What has been your journey as a Dietitian and with family nutrition

I have worked in ambulatory care and public health for most of my career. In these roles I have always helped families make nutrition changes that affect everyone in the household. I have helped these families face the challenges of differing needs and preferences all under one roof without having to be a short order cook.  I have helped many families take the stress and anxiety away from nutrition to help them enjoy family meals while meeting nutrition requirements and helping everyone develop healthy habits

  • Her background in pediatric and family nutrition

Almost 20 years of experience in family nutrition with the last 8 years being focused on pediatrics.

  • What is your personal experience with families and as a mom?

I have 4 children of my own and have faced many successes and challenges throughout the feeding journey and in developing a positive food environment in our home. It isn’t perfect and that is ok, it doesn’t have to be. While I love cooking and baking, with or without my kids, I too feel the stress of having to come up with what to make for dinner sometimes. I know that the struggle is real and love helping families make small but impactful changes to make life run a little smoother, especially leading up to and including meal times.

Insights into past and present experience:

Fertility Nutrition: My interest in nourishing families from the outset motivated me to deepen my understanding of fertility nutrition. I embarked on further learning by taking a course taught by fellow RD Celine Saloumi, who has expertise in women’s health.

Pregnancy Nutrition: I have worked with mom in all three trimesters, recognizing the different energy and daily nutrient requirements during each period, and have found so much joy that fills my heart when I am part of easing their stress on their pregnancy journey as a dietitian.

Postpartum & Breastfeeding Nutrition: I work with moms to help them wean their baby from breastfeeding as they get ready to return to work, since it can be a difficult process to navigate alone. It takes a few steps and is done professionally and gently by a dietitian with experience.

Infant Nutrition: Christine supports parents through the early stages of feeding, including formula feeding, breastfeeding transitions, growth concerns, food allergies, and early feeding challenges. She has experience helping families navigate cow’s milk allergy, FPIES, eczema-related food reactions, food aversions, and concerns with weight gain or inadequate growth.

Baby-Led Weaning: I work a lot with moms and dads to help their baby develop the motor skills to feed themselves, starting at 6 months and up. This helps ease the feeding journey for the parents and helps prepare parents when their babies become toddlers, and they have to return to work and leave them at daycare.

Child Nutrition: Kids face many multifactorial challenges as they start school, especially when participating in competitive sports and academics. Sometimes children need assistance to enhance their results through their diet and lifestyle, especially with things like cow’s milk allergy, FPIES, different allergies, obesity, ADHD, autism, epilepsy, different illnesses and syndromes. I have worked with children of all ages, helping them come out the other side, setting them up for success.

Teenager Nutrition: With busy family schedules, sports, academics, and hormonal changes, supporting a teen’s well-being can feel overwhelming. As a dietitian, I help teens and families identify barriers and create individualized nutrition plans for sports performance, overall health, and their relationship with food. I also help bridge the gap between doctor visits and long waitlists for eating disorder support, with referrals to other health care providers when needed.

Autism & ADHD Nutrition: Autism is a wide spectrum, and sometimes medications are needed to help manage symptoms, but that can affect appetite and cause deficiencies and malnutrition. In such cases, I can counsel the parents and child on ways to manage diet and lifestyle for healthy weight management or weight gain, on a case-by-case basis.

Parent Support and Meal Planning: Parents are a high part of their children’s nutrition journey; therefore, as a dietitian, I work with parents one-on-one to identify any barriers that prevent them from providing a nutritious environment for themselves and their children. I work with parents to come up with nutrition goals together.

Family Nutrition: Healthy parents = healthy kids, so as a dietitian, I work with parents to ensure their foundation in nutrition and healthy living is established and that they are ready to provide a nutritious environment for their children at home and everywhere they go. More than ever, as parents get caught up in busy work schedules and navigate life challenges, it becomes more difficult to plan their day or week around nutrition for themselves and their kids.
