Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why is nutrition so important during pregnancy?

A balanced diet is essential for both yourself and your baby, it will ensure that you are receiving the right nutrients to support fetal growth, sustain your energy, and reduce risks of complication. Each Trimester consists of differing needs, and our plans make sure to meet these changing nutritional requirements.

  • What should I eat during the first trimester?

During the first trimester, you should focus on nutrient-rich foods that will meet the rapid fetal developmental needs. These include nutrients such as folic acid, iron, and protein. It is also common to experience food aversion and nausea, which can make it hard to maintain these needs, so our dietitians will work with you on a plan that will keep you nourished and help alleviate these symptoms.

Seeing a dietitian during pregnancy takes the guesswork out of eating well, giving you the confidence and support to feel your best every step of the way!

  • What should I eat during the second trimester?

In the second trimester, you should consider increasing the calories and proteins you are getting to meet your baby’s continuing growth and development. We will help you get everything you need to promote bone health and energy and prevent anemia.

  • What should I eat during the third trimester?

In the final trimester, you will require more nutrients that support brain development, prevent excessive weight gain, and help manage symptoms that are common during the third semester such as constipation and heartburn. Our prenatal dieticians will accommodate your needs by ensuring you get plenty of protein, omega-3s, and fiber in your meals to help you through your third semester.

  • Can nutrition help with pregnancy symptoms like nausea and fatigue?

Yes, we can guide you on how to implement smaller and nutrient-dense meals to help with nausea and include foods that help fight fatigue. Simple changes in your diet can greatly influence the symptoms you are facing during pregnancy in each trimester.

  • What nutrients are most important during pregnancy?

There are many challenges that can come from improper nutrition which can have negative effects on the mother and the child, from neural tube defects to anemia which can have negative effects on the mother and the child. These can be avoided by ensuring you get adequate nutrients like folic acid, omega-3 fatty acids, protein, and iron. Our dietitians will be able to assess the nutrients you may need to increase and those you already get from your nutrition to create a personalized meal plan that will benefit your pregnancy.

  • How can I manage gestational diabetes with nutrition?

With gestational diabetes, it is essential to monitor and control blood sugar levels by limiting refined carbs, and implementing meals that are higher in fiber, lean protein, and healthy fats. We can create a plan that will help support stable blood sugar levels to support your health and your baby’s development.

  • What kind of nutrition support do you provide for high-risk pregnancies?

We offer specialized support that will help manage conditions that may be affecting your pregnancy including gestational diabetes, high blood pressure, or preeclampsia. We will work closely with you and your healthcare team to ensure we create a nutrition plan that will support you and your baby.

  • How can I make sure I’m eating enough but not gaining too much weight?

It is normal to gain weight during pregnancy, but our dietitians can help monitor and ensure healthy weight gain by balancing nutrient-rich foods with appropriate calorie intake for each trimester, making sure you can nourish your baby without excessive weight gain.

  • Do I need to take supplements during pregnancy?

In many cases, as pregnancy nutritionists, we recommend prenatal vitamins to ensure essential nutrients like folic acid, iron, and calcium are adequately covered. Our dietitians will be able to review your current nutrition to determine if supplementation would be necessary to make sure you get everything you need from food and supplements.

  • How does you pregnancy and prenatal nutrition consultation work?

Our initial consultation for pregnancy will begin with a detailed review of your health history, current nutrition, and any pregnancy-related concerns. Based on that assessment our dietitians will be able to create a personalized plan based on your trimester, needs, and your baby’s development. Ongoing support will ensure your evolving needs are met through each trimester and stage of pregnancy.

  • Are your services covered by insurance?

Many insurance companies cover our nutrition services, and we provide insurance receipts that you can submit for reimbursement. Since insurance providers can vary in their policies, check with your insurance to confirm your plan and coverage details.
